Smoking Cessation Group

The Young Adult Vocational Program has added a Smoking Cessation Group.  The Smoking Cessation Group is to educate the young adults on the history of cigarettes, secondhand smoke, what is in cigarettes, how to plan to quit, deciding on to quit, how much money is spent on cigarettes, the effects cigarettes has on the body, positive changes after quitting, staying smoke free, a list of resources on where they can receive help to quit and guest speakers.  Additionally the young adults will have projects to do on smoking such as a rap, poem, drawing, story, etc..and present it to the group as if the group was young children on why not to smoke.  The Smoking Cessation Group will also conduct a number of smoking experiments the young adults will have to participate in and log.

Samaritan Walk

We had very uplifting experience at the Samaritan Walk this past Saturday. We who went from YAVP walked for "Paul's team" in memory of Paul Morrisey, who passed away this time last year. It was a time to remember Paul and others whose lives have been tragically cut short.

I met Paul's sister, who had organized the team for this event. She is an incredibly strong person, who has met the anniversary of her brother's passing with a persevering grace. I also met other members of Paul's family and they were equally as poised, even in the face of their loss.

It wasn't all solemn however. This walk provided a measure of closure and a cause for us to get together, and for some of u, meet for the first time. When I am in Arlington, or perhaps anywhere in the fall, I will think of this young man and the time I spent with him. I didn't spend a long time with him, but enough to know he didn't make apologies for being his own person.
